FAQs
I am currently offering services virtually via secure video conferencing or telephone.
While individual therapists have their own style, some aspects of the therapeutic process are generally consistent.
Initial sessions typically involve reviewing confidentiality, information gathering, assessment, and goal setting. Next steps include working collaboratively with your therapist to determine a treatment plan and exploring therapeutic modalities that best suit you. Once a treatment plan is established, the work begins, and your therapist will help you address the challenges you want to work on.
The number of sessions is varied and dependent on your treatment goals and the complexity of the issues you want to address in therapy. A simple problem may only take a few sessions, while more complicated challenges may take months or even longer.
While therapy sessions are tailored to meet your specific needs in the moment, much of therapy work takes place outside of the therapy sessions. Ultimately, it is up to you to implement strategies and continue to do the work in your everyday life to create the changes you are seeking to make. The more work done outside of therapy, the quicker the therapy process will progress.
When you meet your goals and are ready to move away from therapy as a support, your therapist will help you with the transition.
Great question! I believe most people could benefit from having a confidential space to talk about challenges and experiences when things aren’t going as planned. However, to put it simply, therapy can be helpful when you are struggling with something and want to have a safe, non-judgmental space to sort things out with an objective third party. If you are unsure whether therapy is right for you, I would be happy to answer any questions you have.
At the heart of therapy is the therapeutic relationship. It is important that you find a therapist you feel comfortable talking with. Equally important to having rapport with your therapist, it is essential that your therapist is qualified to perform the services being offered. Finally, you may want to know that the therapist you work with has also been to therapy themselves. Therapists who have done their own work know what it’s like to be on the client side of the therapeutic relationship. They have deeper understanding and empathy and relate to others with compassion and respect. My own experience attending therapy has helped shape who I am as a therapist.
Therapist vs counsellor
The terms therapist and counsellor are often used interchangeably and are often social workers or psychotherapists.
Registered Social Worker vs Registered Psychotherapist
Psychotherapy is a controlled act in Ontario and both Registered Social Workers (RSW) and Registered Psychotherapists (RP) are permitted to practice psychotherapy under the legislation.
Benefit Coverage
If you have benefits covering psychotherapy or counselling, you may wish to confirm which professional designations are covered (MSW, RSW or RP). Some health plans may only cover psychologists.
Credentials
My credentials for insurance purposes are MSW, RSW. This means I have a Master of Social Work degree and I am a Registered Social Worker with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW).
